• Pre-treatment instructions

While the process in itself is considered to be very safe, individuals opting for laser hair removal at the Excelase clinic should follow the following pre-treatment tips:

    1. Laser treatment should be avoided when you have sunburn and is less effective if you have a suntan
    2. Ideally shaving the area a few days before the treatment and allowing the hair to grow to stubble quickens treatment time
    3. Avoid waxing, bleaching, plucking or threading at least three weeks before the treatment
    4. Prior to attending your treatments, please remove makeup aftershave and perfume to any treated areas.
  • During the treatment

During laser hair removal, you'll wear goggles so your eyes won't be exposed to light from the laser.

    1. At first, you will likely feel a prickling sensation; most people can easily tolerate the procedure. Some people have likened the feeling to that of a very fine rubber band snapping against your skin
    2. You might also detect the smell of singed hair, which is nothing to worry about. Our laser uses cool tip skin cooling technology to cool the skin before the laser is operated which soothes and protects the skin. We also provide cold compresses to help with this
    3. The procedure can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours depending on the work you are having done. The therapist will inform you of the treatment time prior to your session
  • After the procedure

After laser hair removal, no medications or bandages are necessary. You may notice some redness and swelling for the first few hours. Also, stinging may occur for the first 24 to 48 hours. A cold compress often helps in this scenario. Some people experience a slight crusting of the skin. If crusting occurs, keep the area moist with petroleum jelly (Vaseline) or Aloe Vera preparations.

    After treatment:

    1. Avoid exercise and exertion for the first 24 hours. Perspiration from exertion may increase irritation caused by the laser
    2. Avoid exposure to the sun for several weeks after treatment. After this period, make certain you apply sunscreen (SPF 25 or more) whenever you're in the sun. We advise minimal use of makeup and maximum use of moisturiser
    3. Avoid tanning booths — the ultraviolet light damages the skin
    4. Don't wax or pluck hairs for three weeks before treatments
    5. Don't wax or pluck hairs for three weeks before treatments
    6. If needed, the only other acceptable hair removal method during the treatment regimen is shaving
    7. Don't pick at or manipulate the skin in treated areas
    8. Don't rub or scrub the treated area. You may gently wash the area with soap and water
    9. Be aware that hair will continue to shed up to three weeks after the treatment.
